"Houston, we have a problem." Nursing and the broader healthcare workforce require urgent attention. The supply of healthcare professionals is critically low and WE have the power to breathe life back into the healthcare system. While not an Apollo 13-level explosion, the situation is potentially more catastrophic without adequate support. The shortage in nursing and the healthcare workforce has intensified, exacerbated by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Multiple factors are at play, some within our control.

To address this crisis, we can focus on three practical areas:

  1. Find alternatives for the workforce: Technology can be a valuable ally in reducing demand. Tools enhancing access to care and patient monitoring alleviate pressure on the system. However, technology has limitations. It can't replace the human touch, the essence of healthcare. This is fundamentally a people problem that requires a people-centered solution.

  2. Grow the workforce: Recruiting new talent is commendable, but it's a slow and insufficient solution without addressing attrition first. People are leaving the profession as quickly as they join. Time is of the essence, and we can't afford to lose more experienced hands while waiting for new recruits. It is an exercise in futility without first stopping the bleeding.

  3. Maintain the existing workforce: The current workforce is our foundation, but it's under immense pressure. Nurses, in particular, feel the weight of an elephant on their chest. They need urgent support. They need oxygen…STAT!

Each of these areas is crucial and deserves attention. A thousand potential solutions exist, each demanding varying levels of time, effort, and resources. So where do we begin? The most logical starting point is maintaining the existing workforce—the one resource we already have. By focusing on the immediate needs of nurses and other healthcare professionals, we can stabilize the foundation of care. Supporting and empowering the current workforce not only sustains care in the short term but also creates a ripple effect, fostering resilience and retention for the future.

There's no time to waste. Lives hang in the balance—both the lives of healthcare professionals and those they care for. The question is, what immediate actions can be taken to prevent further deterioration? We need more hands-on deck to reduce the strain on those currently in service. While technology is part of the solution, it's not the sole answer. Until we can fully integrate technological advancements, we must improvise.

The solution must be timely, simple, affordable, effective, and universal. We need a comprehensive strategy that not only addresses the current crisis but also sets the foundation for a sustainable and resilient healthcare workforce. It's time to act decisively, for the sake of those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
